Workshop 4

Big qual: the breadth-and-depth method of working with large amounts of qualitative data

How can you analyse large amounts of qualitative data in a way that retains the distinctive characteristics of rigorous qualitative research? This is a question increasingly faced by researchers working with qualitative data. In this introductory workshop you will develop your knowledge and skills for working with qualitative data at scale through the Breadth-and-Depth Method of analysis. The method, developed as part of the National Centre for Research Methods Phase III research programme, can be used with any big qual material: primary or secondary, snapshot or longitudinal, and from single-sited, multiple-sited or separate multiple studies. It is an iterative approach to managing and analysing large volumes of qualitative data that can be applied flexibly whatever the theoretical logic, substantive topic and nature of the qualitative data. In the session you will be introduced to the methodological foundations for identifying, merging and analysing multiple sets of data from different sources, and working with large amounts of secondary or primary qualitative data. Through group discussion, and using real case study examples, we will reflect on the challenges and opportunities of this approach to working with qualitative data, and its potential future role as evidence for policy making.

Workshop Facilitator

Dr Emma Davidson is a Senior Lecturer in Social Policy at the University of Edinburgh. She is interested in how we can use research to meaningfully reveal and tackle social inequalities. She draws on qualitative methods that help understand people and their lives from their own vantage points, and has a particular interest in collaborative and participatory methodologies. Her book (Big Qual: A Guide to Breadth-and-Depth Analysis), written with Susie Weller, Rosalind Edwards and Lynn Jamieson, explores approaches for conducting large-scale qualitative data analysis while retaining all that is distinct about rigorous qualitative research. Emma’s workshop will present the Breadth-and-Depth method, and explore its application in policy contexts.
